Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the county law, in relation to appointment of school resource officers to private elementary and secondary schools

AI Summary

This bill allows sheriffs in counties outside of New York City to appoint school resource officers (SROs) to private elementary and secondary schools under specific conditions. To be eligible, more than 50% of the private school's property must be located within the sheriff's county and outside any city boundaries. The school must request the officer, and the county legislature must approve the appointments. These school resource officers would be employees of the private school, not county employees, and would not be considered public officers. The sheriff can set written procedures for these appointments and charge an administrative fee up to $50 per year per officer. The sheriff can also revoke appointments for non-compliance with procedures or other disqualifying reasons. The goal appears to be providing safety and security for private schools in rural or suburban areas that may not have immediate access to local law enforcement. The bill would take effect 90 days after becoming law.
