AI Summary

This bill modifies existing laws regarding school security personnel in New Mexico, expanding the definition and requirements for school security and security guards who may be employed by school districts. The bill creates a new category called "assistant school security personnel," which includes level one or level two security guards registered under the Private Investigations Act who are employed by school districts but not authorized to carry firearms. For school security personnel, the bill broadens the eligibility to include not just retired law enforcement officers, but also retired commissioned peace officers and level three security guards. The legislation establishes comprehensive requirements for hiring school security personnel, including mandatory background checks, specific training programs, physical and psychological evaluations, and restrictions on carrying firearms. The bill also amends registration requirements for level one, two, and three security guards, specifically allowing school districts and charter schools to employ these guards. Additional provisions mandate training that includes working with students with special needs, cultural competency, and prohibited profiling practices. The changes aim to enhance school safety by creating more stringent and detailed standards for individuals responsible for security in educational settings.
