This bill provides additional flexibility to Warren County Schools, Weldon City Schools, Halifax County Schools, and Roanoke Rapids Graded School District in setting their school calendars by removing existing statewide restrictions on school opening and closing dates. Previously, schools were required to start no earlier than the Monday closest to August 26 and end no later than the Friday closest to June 11, with limited exceptions for schools experiencing frequent weather-related closures. The bill eliminates these uniform calendar requirements for the specified school districts, allowing them to independently determine their own opening and closing dates. The changes will take effect beginning with the 2025-2026 school year and specifically apply only to the four named school districts, giving them more autonomy in scheduling their academic year. This legislative adjustment recognizes that local school boards may have unique scheduling needs that are not well-served by a one-size-fits-all approach to school calendars.
