This bill modifies Florida Statute 588.17 regarding the disposition of impounded livestock by removing the previous exception that excluded cattle from being adopted or humanely disposed of by sheriffs or county animal control centers. Under the current law, stray livestock could be offered for adoption or humanely disposed of, but cattle were previously exempt from this provision. Now, cattle will be subject to the same rules as other types of livestock when impounded, which means they can be adopted or humanely disposed of after a specified waiting period. The bill requires that before adoption or disposal, the sheriff or county animal control center must either provide written notice to the known owner (if possible) or publish a notice on their website if the owner is unknown. The waiting period must be at least 3 business days, during which the owner can reclaim the livestock by paying associated impoundment fees. The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, providing time for local agencies to prepare for the change in livestock management procedures.
