This bill requires public school districts in Texas to have at least one automated external defibrillator (AED) available at each campus, with specific guidelines for placement and accessibility. An AED is a portable electronic device used to help people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest by delivering an electric shock to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. The bill modifies existing education code to mandate that the AED must be placed in a clearly marked and accessible location, and importantly, cannot be stored in a locked case when students or school employees are regularly present on campus. The principal of each campus is responsible for determining the AED's placement, with a specific focus on locating it near primary areas where students engage in athletic activities. The legislation requires all public schools to have AEDs available by the first instructional day of the 2026-2027 school year. The bill will take effect immediately if it receives a two-thirds vote from the Texas legislature, or otherwise will become effective on September 1, 2025.
