Bill Summary

AN ACT To amend Code Section 20-2-150 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to eligibility for enrollment under the "Quality Basic Education Act," so as to provide that certain students whose parents or guardians are on active duty in the United States armed forces are eligible for enrollment in the public school of the attendance zone in which they intend to reside regardless of whether they have entered into a lease, purchased a house, or otherwise secured housing within such attendance zone, subject to limitations; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for other purposes.

AI Summary

This bill amends the Georgia Code to provide more flexible school enrollment options for students whose parents or guardians are active-duty military members. Under the proposed changes, such students can enroll in the public school of the attendance zone where they intend to reside, even if they have not yet physically secured housing in that area. The enrollment is initially provisional and requires written verification within 90 days that the parent or guardian has either established residency or made good faith efforts to do so. If the family does not ultimately reside in the intended attendance zone, they must enroll the student in the school of the zone where they actually live. An important exception is made for high school juniors and seniors, who can remain enrolled in their current school until graduation, regardless of changes in physical residency. This modification aims to support military families by reducing educational disruption during transfers and relocations, recognizing the unique challenges faced by military personnel and their dependents.
