This bill extends an existing law that allows the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to impose a surcharge of up to $35 on certain court filing fees, such as civil, family, probate, or special proceeding initial documents. The surcharge is specifically designed to supplement the county's Courthouse Construction Fund, with funds earmarked for earthquake retrofitting, renovation, and remodeling of the Central San Bernardino Courthouse, including the original 1926 building and its subsequent additions. The current law was set to expire on January 1, 2026, but this bill would extend the provisions until January 1, 2039. The surcharge will be collected until either the amortized costs are repaid or 30 years have passed since the bond sale, and it will not apply to filings that are free or have waived fees.
