The punishment varies based on the number of prior offenses and the value of the stolen mail, ranging from a Class A1 misdemeanor for a first-time offense involving less than $200 to a Class D felony for a third or subsequent offense or when the mail's value exceeds $2,000. Specifically, a first-time offense with mail valued under $200 is a Class A1 misdemeanor, a second offense with mail under $200 becomes a Class G felony, a first or second offense with mail valued at $200 or more is a Class E felony, and a third or subsequent offense or mail exceeding $2,000 is a Class D felony. The law will become effective on December 1, 2025, and will apply to offenses committed on or after that date.
