This bill amends the town law to authorize the town of Smithtown in Suffolk County to create local ordinances specifically regulating the discharge of longbows and crossbows in areas where such activities might pose a risk to public safety or nearby residents. The bill allows the town to create more restrictive regulations than existing laws, and requires the town to post signs notifying people of these new regulations. Before changing existing distance rules for longbow and crossbow discharge (currently set at 150 and 250 feet respectively, as established in section 11-0931 of the environmental conservation law), the town must provide 30 days' notice to the regional supervisor of fish and game at the department of environmental conservation. The bill will go into effect 90 days after becoming law, providing time for the town to develop and implement these new regulations about longbow and crossbow usage.
