This bill allows New York State Police troopers who have completed more than 17 years of service to receive additional retirement credit for previous work as a deputy sheriff, county corrections officer, or state corrections officer directly involved in law enforcement activities. Specifically, troopers can obtain three months of service credit for every five months of prior service, up to a maximum of two years. To receive this credit, members must pay the retirement system three percent of their most recent annual salary for each year of service being claimed, which can be done through payroll deductions. The payment must be completed before retirement, and the amount of credit will be proportional to the payments made. Members must apply for this credit before their retirement date and cannot have already received credit under a different section of the retirement law. If a member dies before retirement or the additional service credit does not increase their retirement benefit or death benefit, the payments will be refunded with interest. The state of New York will bear the costs associated with this service credit beyond the member's payments. The bill takes effect immediately and is intended to provide additional recognition for law enforcement service across different agencies.
