This bill requires the New York State Police and local police departments (at the county, city, and town levels) to quickly notify child care facilities about nearby emergency situations. Specifically, within 30 minutes of an emergency occurring, police must call a designated contact person at child day care centers, group family day care homes, family day care homes, and school-aged child care homes about incidents in their vicinity. These emergencies include school evacuations, lockdowns, and active shooter situations. In return, each child care facility must provide local police departments with the name and contact information of their designated emergency notification recipient. The bill aims to improve communication and safety for child care providers by ensuring they are promptly informed about potential threats or dangerous situations near their facilities. The law will go into effect 60 days after it is signed, giving child care centers and police departments time to establish their emergency contact protocols.
