This bill amends Nevada state law to expand educational benefits for families of military and public safety personnel killed in the line of duty. Specifically, the bill requires the Board of Regents of the University of Nevada to grant a complete waiver of registration fees, laboratory fees, and other mandatory fees for surviving spouses and children of service members killed while on active duty in the Armed Forces. The waiver can be used for any program within the Nevada System of Higher Education, including trade, vocational, graduate, and professional programs. Surviving spouses can use the waiver for 10 years after the service member's death, while children can use it for 10 years after turning 18 or after initial enrollment. The bill also expands existing provisions for public safety officers' families, including modifying the definition of a "public safety officer killed in the line of duty" to include those who die from injuries sustained while traveling to or from work under certain circumstances. Additionally, the bill ensures that these students are considered Nevada residents for tuition purposes, effectively eliminating out-of-state tuition charges for these family members.
