AI Summary

This bill proposes to rename the Georgia Public Service Commission to the Georgia Public Utilities Commission, with the change set to take effect on January 1, 2027, contingent upon voter approval of a corresponding constitutional amendment in the November 2026 election. The bill ensures a smooth transition by stipulating that all existing rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and administrative orders of the Public Service Commission will remain in effect under the new name. The current commissioners will continue to serve out their terms as members of the Public Utilities Commission, and all existing contractual rights, privileges, and obligations will be seamlessly transferred to the new commission. Additionally, the bill makes comprehensive conforming changes across numerous sections of the Georgia Code, replacing references to the "Public Service Commission" with "Public Utilities Commission" in over 75 different code sections spanning various areas of state law, such as telecommunications, transportation, licensing, and administrative procedures. If the constitutional amendment is not ratified, the bill will automatically be repealed, and the commission will retain its current name.
