This bill creates two new programs aimed at supporting former offenders through employment and housing opportunities in the forestry and conservation sector. First, the Director of the Department of Corrections is authorized to establish a transitional housing program in coordination with the Division of Forestry, specifically targeting minimum-security offenders who have previously been denied parole due to a lack of housing options. The program will provide training in forestry management and conservation to help these individuals transition back into society. Second, the bill requires the State Forester Firewarden to create a hiring program that provides a pathway for former offenders who have worked in conservation camps and performed firefighting duties to be hired as firefighters. To be eligible, these individuals must have completed the necessary training, obtained required certifications, and meet additional qualifications established by the State Forester Firewarden. This legislation aims to reduce recidivism by offering meaningful job training and employment opportunities to former offenders in the field of forestry and firefighting.
