AI Summary

This bill, named the "Emily Adkins Family Protection Act," focuses on improving the screening, treatment, and understanding of venous thromboembolisms (VTEs) in Florida. The legislation requires hospitals with emergency departments to develop policies and procedures for assessing and treating patients at risk of VTEs, which are blood clots that can form in deep veins and potentially travel to the lungs, causing serious health complications. The bill mandates that hospitals train non-physician clinical staff annually on VTE risk assessment and treatment. Additionally, it establishes a statewide VTE registry managed by a private non-profit entity, which will collect detailed data on VTE cases, including patient demographics, diagnosis methods, and treatment recommendations. Hospitals will be required to report specific information to this registry starting July 1, 2026. The bill also updates training requirements for nursing assistants in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, mandating that they learn to recognize VTE signs and symptoms. Furthermore, assisted living facilities must now provide residents with a consumer information pamphlet about VTEs, their risk factors, and potential symptoms. The legislation aims to improve patient awareness, medical professional education, and overall understanding of this potentially life-threatening condition.
