This bill amends the Public School Code of 1949 to provide free tuition for school board members in eligible courses within the state higher education system. The legislation requires the board to identify and review courses that could be deemed eligible, develop a list of such courses, and update this list every three years. Each higher education institution must annually report the number of school board members taking eligible courses. Starting June 1, 2026, the board will notify the General Assembly about the total number of eligible courses taken by school board members, and the General Assembly will appropriate funds to reimburse the education system for the waived tuition. An "eligible course" is defined as a course approved by the board that is related to the role and responsibilities of a school board member and offered at no charge to school board members who serve on a school board of directors in Pennsylvania. The bill aims to support local education leadership by providing opportunities for professional development and education at no cost to school board members. The legislation will take effect 60 days after its enactment.
