This bill modifies the existing law regarding special registration plates for military personnel by exempting honorably discharged veterans from most vehicle registration fees while maintaining a standard $10 initial application fee. Specifically, the bill eliminates additional fees for the first special military license plate, allowing veterans to obtain their special "Veterans" license plate with only a minimal $10 administrative charge. The legislation applies to active, retired, or honorably discharged military personnel from any branch of the United States armed services, and will also continue to allow special provisions for surviving spouses of military members killed in combat. The Department of Motor Vehicles (referred to as "the division" in the bill) will be responsible for issuing these plates and will require applicants to provide documentation proving their military service status. Additionally, the bill permits veterans to obtain special plates for multiple vehicles they personally own and allows for the creation of new military organization-specific plates if at least 100 potential applicants can be guaranteed.
