This bill requires certain entities to stock opioid antagonists (medications that can reverse opioid overdoses, such as naloxone) and store naloxone nasal sprays with or near automated external defibrillators (AEDs). Specifically, the bill mandates that school districts, public libraries, educational boards, charter schools, and non-public schools must now keep opioid antagonists on-site in each instructional facility or library, changing the previous language from "may" to "shall". These entities are required to have naloxone nasal sprays located with or adjacent to every AED and must ensure that employees who administer the medication have been trained by an approved program. The bill expands the definition of "entity" to include additional locations like restaurants, bars, retail stores, shopping malls, hotels, and public access defibrillation providers. The legislation also stipulates that any organization possessing an AED must stock opioid antagonists near the defibrillator cabinets. The bill is designed to increase access to life-saving medication in public spaces and improve emergency response capabilities for potential opioid overdoses. The act will take effect on the first of July following its passage.
