This bill modifies the Texas Education Code by eliminating references to "personal skills" in the section concerning character traits instruction in public schools. Specifically, the bill removes mentions of personal skills from the section heading and within the text, while maintaining the focus on positive character traits that schools must integrate into their curriculum. The character traits that will continue to be required include courage, trustworthiness, integrity, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, good citizenship, school pride, and gratitude. The bill requires school districts to develop character education programs in consultation with parents, educators, and community leaders, but removes specific references to self-management skills, interpersonal skills, and responsible decision-making skills. The changes will take effect in the 2025-2026 school year, and the bill becomes immediately effective if it receives a two-thirds vote in the Texas Legislature, or otherwise takes effect on September 1, 2025.
