This resolution recognizes Gladys Stone Wright on her 100th birthday, honoring her groundbreaking career as a pioneering female band director. Born in 1925 in Wasco, Oregon, Wright was one of the first women band directors in the United States and the first in Oregon, overcoming significant gender barriers in the music education profession. She served as a high school band director at multiple schools in Oregon and Indiana from 1948 to 1984, during which time her bands consistently received "superior" ratings. Wright was a trailblazer in her field, becoming the second woman in the American School Band Directors Association, founding the Women Band Directors National Association, and receiving numerous prestigious awards, including a citation of excellence from the National Band Association and induction into both the International Women Band Directors Hall of Fame and the National Band Association Hall of Fame. She was also the first woman to be a guest conductor with the United States Navy Band and the Goldman Band. The resolution celebrates her achievements as a composer, author, music judge, and clinician, and acknowledges her significant contributions to diversifying and expanding the band profession. The Indiana House of Representatives formally recognizes her accomplishments and celebrates her milestone 100th birthday.
