This bill appropriates $75,000 in both fiscal years 2026 and 2027 from the general fund to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture to provide grants to the Minnesota Turf Seed Council for conducting agricultural research. The research will focus on two primary areas: improving the production of forage and turf seed through developing new and enhanced varieties, and studying native plants, which includes investigations into plant breeding, nutrient management, pest and disease control, and assessing crop yield and viability. The council is permitted to subcontract with qualified third-party researchers to conduct some or all of the research, and any unspent funds from the first year will remain available in the second year. Additionally, the bill requires the Minnesota Turf Seed Council to prepare a comprehensive report detailing how the grant money was used and the research accomplishments achieved. This report must be submitted by January 15, 2027, to the chairs and ranking minority members of the legislative committees responsible for agriculture finance and policy.
