Bill Summary
AN ACT to amend the insurance law, in relation to health insurance coverage for acupuncture services
AI Summary
This bill requires large group health insurance contracts in New York to provide coverage for acupuncture treatment when prescribed by a healthcare provider acting within their legally defined scope of practice. Specifically, any large group health insurance contract that already covers physician services in an office setting or provides major medical or comprehensive-type coverage must now include acupuncture treatment as defined under section 82-211 of the state education law. The bill allows insurers to apply reasonable limitations to this coverage, such as deductibles, co-payments, co-insurance amounts, fee limits, and utilization review. The legislation will take effect 90 days after becoming law and will apply to insurance policies and contracts that are issued, renewed, modified, altered, or amended on or after that date. The goal of this bill appears to be expanding access to acupuncture as a recognized form of medical treatment by mandating its inclusion in large group health insurance plans.
