This bill modifies the existing tax law regarding public safety communications surcharges by redirecting a portion of the collected revenues from the state general fund to a new municipal first responder grants fund. Specifically, 41.7% of the surcharge revenues will now be deposited into this new fund, which is designed to provide grants to municipalities for purchasing critical emergency response equipment such as personal protective gear, rescue equipment, hazardous materials systems, air systems, and communication technology for first responders. The remaining balance of the surcharge revenues will continue to be deposited into the statewide public safety communications account of the miscellaneous special revenue fund. The bill aims to more directly support local emergency services by creating a dedicated funding mechanism for municipal first responders to acquire essential equipment and technology. The changes will take effect immediately upon enactment.
