Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the social services law, in relation to payment of burial expenses by local public welfare officials

AI Summary

This bill modifies the social services law to establish new requirements for applications related to burial expenses for deceased public assistance recipients. Specifically, the bill mandates that applications for payment or reimbursement of burial expenses by local public welfare officials must include consent forms allowing the official to directly verify that the deceased did not have sufficient funds or insurance to cover burial costs. Additionally, such applications cannot be submitted earlier than 30 days after the recipient's death. The bill also requires banking organizations to release a decedent's account information to local public welfare officials within three business days when requested, helping to expedite the verification process. This legislation aims to streamline the process of determining financial eligibility for burial expense assistance and provide local welfare officials with the necessary tools to verify a deceased person's financial status efficiently. The bill will take effect 90 days after becoming law.
