This bill requires all medical students, medical residents, and physician assistant students in New York State to complete specific coursework or training about sickle cell disease (a serious inherited blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become hard and crescent-shaped) as part of their educational curriculum. The medical schools, residency programs, and physician assistant programs must provide training that is approved by the state department of health. Students will need to document their completion of this training and demonstrate competence in the subject. The department of health is required to develop these training guidelines in consultation with the state board for medicine and the health equity council. Furthermore, the department must submit an annual report to the governor and legislature evaluating the implementation and effectiveness of this sickle cell disease training requirement. The bill will take effect 180 days after becoming law, with provisions allowing for immediate preparation of necessary regulations.
