This bill prohibits the sale of motor fuel (gasoline or diesel) for use in vehicles or motorboats at prices that include fractions of a cent, effectively requiring fuel prices to be rounded to the nearest whole cent. Currently, gas stations often display prices with tenths of a cent (like $3.999 per gallon), but this legislation would make such pricing illegal. Sellers who violate this provision would be subject to a civil penalty of up to $25 per day for each day they continue to use fractional pricing. The bill amends the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law to add this new requirement and removes previous language that allowed the display of tenths of a cent on multiple product dispensing devices. The law would go into effect 180 days after it becomes law, giving fuel retailers time to adjust their pricing and signage. The Commissioner of Agriculture and Markets is authorized to create any necessary rules and regulations to implement this new pricing requirement during that preliminary period.
