This bill revises Nevada's laws regarding student athletes and their ability to be compensated for the use of their name, image, and likeness (NIL). Currently, public and private educational institutions are prohibited from allowing student athletes to be compensated by organizations other than the institution or national collegiate athletic associations, and from compensating student athletes for their NIL. The bill eliminates these prohibitions, allowing student athletes to enter into compensation contracts with any organization, including their own institution or national collegiate athletic associations. Additionally, the bill adds a new provision making all contracts and related communications about student athlete NIL compensation confidential and not subject to public records requests. This means that contracts, disclosure materials, and communications between student athletes and their institutions regarding NIL compensation will be kept private. The changes aim to provide student athletes with more flexibility and opportunities to monetize their personal brand while attending educational institutions. The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, giving institutions and athletic associations time to prepare for the new regulations.
