This resolution honors the life and memory of Paula Lawton Bevington, a distinguished Georgia resident who passed away on August 4, 2024. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1937, Bevington was a trailblazing professional who graduated magna cum laude from St. Mary's College and earned her law degree from Yale Law School, becoming the first woman associate at Sutherland Asbill & Brennan, LLP in Atlanta. She had an impressive career that included serving in the Peace Corps, conducting international law research, working at Servidyne Incorporated, and holding leadership roles in numerous civic organizations such as the Junior League of Atlanta, The Carter Center, and the Atlanta Legal Aid Society. Bevington was also a groundbreaking community leader, serving as the first woman president of the Rotary Club of Atlanta and chairing the Georgia Human Relations Commission. The resolution celebrates her as a compassionate and generous woman who believed in the power of family, friendships, and community to drive social transformation. The House of Representatives expresses its deepest condolences and directs the Clerk to provide a copy of the resolution to her family, which includes eight children, twelve grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
