This resolution honors the life of Michael Ernest Sumner, a distinguished Georgia citizen who passed away on February 22, 2025. Born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1958, Sumner moved to Decatur, Georgia as a child and became a prominent lawyer and community leader. After graduating from Lakeside High School, the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce, and the University of Georgia's Lumpkin School of Law, he established his own law practice in Newnan in 1996. Sumner served 16 years on the Coweta County Board of Education, including five years as board chair, where he made significant contributions such as founding the Nixon Centre for Performing and Visual Arts and developing Georgia's first technical charter high school. A devoted family man, he was married to Leah for 39 years and had three sons and a granddaughter. Deeply committed to his faith, Sumner was an active member of Central Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and participating in various church activities. The resolution, passed by the House of Representatives, honors his life, expresses condolences for his passing, and directs the House Clerk to provide a copy of the resolution to his family, commemorating Sumner's substantial contributions to his community, profession, and church.
