This bill requires West Virginia public high schools to have full-time athletic trainers to provide medical services and protection for student athletes. The county can directly hire the athletic trainer using budget funds, levy money, or COVID CARES Act funds, or alternatively contract with a healthcare facility or university. The athletic trainer must be certified and licensed by the West Virginia Board of Physical Therapy, and will be responsible for performing specialized health procedures such as concussion evaluations, musculoskeletal injury management, acute injury assessment, and handling environmental illnesses. The trainer must also ensure compliance with state scholastic athletic policies, including those related to concussions, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and emergency action plans for sports. This bill aims to improve student athlete safety and provide professional medical support during athletic activities.
