This bill provides additional housing protections for families with children who have autism in rental properties. Specifically, the bill allows tenants with an autistic child to request reasonable accommodations from their landlord when there are potential safety hazards like lakes, rivers, streams, or other attractive nuisances near the rental property. Landlords must make reasonable modifications to their policies, practices, or physical property to help protect the child from harm, unless these modifications would fundamentally alter the property's structure. The landlord may request documentation proving the child's autism status, except in cases where the condition is obviously apparent or already known to the landlord. Importantly, the bill also prohibits landlords from retaliating against tenants who make such accommodation requests. This legislation aims to provide an extra layer of support and safety for families with autistic children by empowering them to seek necessary protective modifications in their rental housing.
