This resolution establishes a legislative working group to provide continued oversight of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands' (DHHL) use of $600,000,000 appropriated by Act 279 in 2022, which was intended to reduce the waiting list for native Hawaiian homestead leases. The working group will consist of seven specific House Representatives, with Representative Luke A. Evslin serving as Chair, and the Speaker of the House retains the ability to modify the group's membership. The working group is tasked with monitoring the DHHL's efforts to utilize these funds, with a mandate to submit a progress report twenty days before the 2026 Regular Session and a final report twenty days before the 2027 Regular Session. The group's oversight stems from previous recommendations made during public hearings, including the importance of helping native Hawaiian families remain connected to their homeland, especially given that more native Hawaiians now live in the continental United States than in Hawaii. The working group will officially cease to exist on January 1, 2027, and is required to transmit a certified copy of the resolution to the Chairperson of the Hawaiian Homes Commission.
