This bill establishes a Special Commission, called the Promise Commission, to comprehensively study and reimagine public education in Massachusetts for the next five to ten years. The Commission will consist of 11 members, including state education commissioners, representatives from educational associations like school superintendents and teachers unions, and a representative from Latinos for Education. The Commission's study will cover a wide range of education topics, such as improving the educator pipeline (including recruitment and retention), increasing educator diversity, developing curriculum that prepares students for a global society, exploring flexible learning models, promoting multilingualism, creating alternative assessment methods beyond standardized testing (like MCAS), and developing holistic educational approaches that provide social and emotional support from pre-K through college. The Commission is tasked with examining best practices from other states and countries and will ultimately produce a comprehensive report that re-envisions the potential of the Massachusetts education system for current and future students, with the goal of driving meaningful education reform.
