This bill requires the Department of Mental Health and the Department of Education to conduct a comprehensive study focused on PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections) and PANS (Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) in pediatric and adolescent psychiatric hospital settings and therapeutic day schools. The study aims to determine the prevalence of these neuroimmune disorders and investigate cases of misdiagnosis by using established clinical criteria from the PANS/PANDAS Consortium and other specialized experts. The departments will interview children and families who were previously misdiagnosed and consult with the Department of Public Health's PANDAS/PANS Advisory Council and professionals in relevant settings. The study's findings will identify the prevalence of these disorders, report outcomes of misdiagnosed cases, and include a detailed report to be submitted by December 31, 2026, to various legislative committees, health departments, and administrative offices. This research is intended to improve understanding and recognition of these complex neuropsychiatric conditions that can be associated with streptococcal infections and potentially lead to more accurate diagnosis and treatment.
