This bill amends the existing law governing the State Court of Forsyth County to add a third judge to the court, effective July 1, 2026. The new judge will be initially appointed by the Governor for a term ending on December 31, 2028, with subsequent judges to be elected by Forsyth County voters in nonpartisan elections during the general primary. The bill also establishes the position of chief judge, who will be the judge with the longest continuous service on the court. The chief judge will have numerous administrative responsibilities, including managing courtroom space in consultation with the Superior Court's chief judge, coordinating court budgets, establishing personnel policies, managing court personnel systems, handling visiting judge assignments, and working to improve operational efficiencies. The chief judge will be required to regularly meet with other court judges to discuss court management, collaborate on best practices, and address issues affecting the court. This legislation aims to enhance the administrative structure and capacity of the Forsyth County State Court by adding a third judge and creating a more structured leadership role within the court.
