This bill allows school nurses who are members of certain retirement systems (teacher's, municipal, city of Boston, or state) to receive creditable service for previous work experience in nursing. To qualify, nurses must be employed in a school approved by the department of education and must pay a makeup payment equal to 10% of their regular annual compensation at the time they entered the retirement system for each year of service they wish to purchase, along with buy back interest. Nurses can only receive this benefit after completing ten or more years of membership service, and the maximum additional creditable service is limited to three years. Eligible nurses must apply for this creditable service within 90 days of being notified by their retirement board of their eligibility, or for currently eligible members, within 90 days of the act's effective date. This provision allows school nurses to have previous nursing work experience count towards their retirement benefits, potentially enabling them to retire earlier or receive a higher retirement allowance.
