This bill establishes a special commission to comprehensively study mattress disposal and recycling practices in Massachusetts. The commission will investigate the financial and environmental impacts of managing mattresses, bed foundations, and box springs at the end of their lifecycle. The commission will be composed of diverse stakeholders, including representatives from the state environmental protection department, state legislature, governor's office, mattress recycling social enterprises, MassRecycle, and the International Sleep Products Association. The group is required to hold its first meeting by June 1, 2025, and submit a detailed report with legislative recommendations by November 30, 2025, to various state legislative bodies and committees. The goal is to develop strategies that can reduce the environmental and financial burdens associated with mattress disposal while promoting more sustainable recycling practices.
