This bill requires school committees in cities, towns, and regional school districts to establish a naloxone (Narcan) overdose prevention program. Specifically, the program mandates that every school nurse be trained in naloxone assistance and maintain naloxone in their office. Naloxone is a medication used to rapidly reverse opioid overdose, typically administered as a nasal spray. The program can be developed with support from the department of education and department of public health. Additionally, public schools will be required to offer extracurricular training to secondary students on how to administer naloxone hydrochloride, with the training to be delivered by a qualified instructor using standards from a nationally recognized program or organization. The goal of this legislation is to increase preparedness and response capabilities in schools to address potential opioid overdose situations, ultimately enhancing student and staff safety.
