This bill establishes new requirements for medical directors in skilled nursing facilities in Massachusetts. It defines a "certified medical director" as someone certified by the American Board of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine or an equivalent organization, as determined by the department of public health. Starting January 1, 2027, skilled nursing facilities will be prohibited from contracting with a medical director who is not, or will not become within 5 years, a certified medical director. Existing medical directors employed as of January 1, 2027, will have until January 1, 2030, to obtain certification. Facilities must notify the department within 10 calendar days of any changes to their medical director, and all facilities must submit the required information by June 30, 2027. The bill also establishes penalties for individuals who falsely represent themselves as certified medical directors, including potential fines of at least $500 and/or up to 6 months in a house of correction. This legislation aims to ensure that medical directors in skilled nursing facilities meet professional certification standards and maintain high-quality medical oversight.
