This bill, known as Ensuring Student Representation or Aidan's Law, amends existing Massachusetts education law to strengthen student representation in school governance. It requires school committees in cities, towns, and regional school districts, as well as charter school boards, to meet at least once every other month during school sessions with a student advisory committee composed of five student members elected by their high school student body. These student advisory committees must elect a chairperson annually, who will serve as an ex-officio, nonvoting member of the school committee or charter school board. The chairperson is subject to the committee's rules, serves without compensation, and typically cannot attend executive sessions unless specifically granted permission. Additionally, the bill allows school committees or charter school boards to designate a student outreach coordinator to help establish and support the student advisory committee and keep students informed about the committee's agenda. This legislation aims to provide students with a more formal channel for input and representation in educational decision-making processes.
