This bill requires public schools serving grades 6-12 and public and private higher education institutions to include the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline's telephone and text message number on all new or replacement student identification cards. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is a national mental health crisis support service that provides 24/7 free and confidential support for individuals experiencing mental health distress. The law will take effect on July 1, 2025, and schools with existing supplies of student ID cards that do not include the 988 number may continue to use those cards until their current stock is depleted. The goal of the legislation is to increase awareness and accessibility of mental health support resources for students by ensuring that crisis support contact information is readily available on student identification cards, potentially helping students who may be experiencing mental health challenges to quickly access help.
