This bill amends the Massachusetts General Laws to update and expand the definition of "veteran" to be more comprehensive and inclusive. The new definition now recognizes veterans as individuals who: (1) served on active duty in Uniformed Services or full-time national guard/reserve duty under specific federal codes, (2) were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable, (3) include American Merchant Marine members who served in armed conflict between December 7, 1941, and December 31, 1946, (4) have served at least six years as an active drilling reserve component member, or (5) were awarded a service-connected disability by the U.S. Veterans Administration or died in service under honorable conditions. The bill also provides detailed definitions of "Active Duty," "Armed Forces," and "Uniformed Services," which now explicitly include all military branches, commissioned corps of public health and oceanic services. Additionally, the bill specifies certain circumstances under which an individual would not be considered a veteran, such as withdrawing citizenship intentions, being discharged as an enemy alien, being proven guilty of desertion, or having only served in auxiliary or temporary reserve roles, or receiving a dishonorable discharge.
