This bill amends Massachusetts state law to establish a special "Blue Star Family" license plate for immediate family members (parents, children, siblings, or spouses) of police officers who have been killed in the line of duty. The bill requires the state's registrar of motor vehicles to provide these special license plates or distinctive emblems free of charge to eligible family members, upon presenting satisfactory proof of their relationship to the deceased officer. To qualify, the officer must have died under circumstances that would make them eligible for inclusion on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. The special license plates can be for one private passenger motor vehicle or a motorcycle, and the registrar may also allow a personalized "Blue Star Family" registration of up to six characters. This legislation aims to honor and recognize the families of police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities.
