This resolution honors the life of John Lawrence Wilborn Sr., a prominent educator, public servant, and community leader from Marshall, Texas, who passed away on February 1, 2025, at the age of 92. Born in 1932, Wilborn was a graduate of H.B. Pemberton High School and earned degrees from Wiley University and Texas Southern University, and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He had a distinguished career in education, working as a teacher for nearly 30 years and an administrator for 8 years, ultimately retiring from Marshall Independent School District in 1991. Wilborn was also a significant political figure, serving on the Marshall City Council for 24 years and becoming the city's second African American mayor from 1992 to 1994, where he worked to integrate administrative positions in municipal government. The resolution, passed by the Texas Senate on March 13, 2025, pays tribute to his life, acknowledges his community contributions, and extends condolences to his family, which includes his wife Kathryn and three children: John Jr., Jeffrey, and Stephanie.
