AI Summary
This bill provides a homestead tax exemption for senior citizens in the City of Atlanta independent school district. Specifically, residents who are 65 years of age or older will receive a $50,000 exemption on the assessed value of their homestead for educational ad valorem taxes. The exemption applies to properties up to five contiguous acres and will be available starting January 1, 2026. There is an annual aggregate cap of $487,804,878 on total exemptions, which means if the total claimed exemptions exceed this amount, they will be proportionally reduced. To receive the exemption, seniors must file an initial application with the City of Atlanta, after which the exemption will be automatically renewed each year as long as they continue to occupy the home. The bill requires approval through a referendum vote in November 2025, and it must pass with more than half of voters supporting it. Importantly, this exemption is in addition to any other existing homestead exemptions and only applies to the City of Atlanta independent school district's educational taxes, not to state, county, or municipal taxes.
