This bill amends Chapter 90 of the Massachusetts General Laws to create a special license plate for survivors of firefighters and police officers who died in the line of duty. Specifically, the bill requires the Registry of Motor Vehicles (the registrar) to provide, free of charge, a distinctive license plate to immediate family members (including parents, children, siblings, grandchildren, and spouses) of paid professional firefighters, call firefighters, police officers, and reserve police officers who have died while performing their official duties. To obtain the special plate, the family member must provide documentation that satisfactorily proves their relationship to the deceased first responder, with the specific evidence requirements to be determined by the registrar. The license plate will feature a design approved by the registrar, and will serve as a memorial recognition of the sacrifice made by the fallen firefighter or police officer.
