This bill requires that gas stoves sold in Massachusetts must include a warning label and sales display signage that informs consumers about potential health risks associated with gas stoves. Specifically, the bill mandates that starting January 1, 2026, any gas stove sold in the state must have an adhesive label stating: "WARNING: Gas stoves can release nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide inside homes at levels exceeding the Environmental Protection Agency's standards for outdoor air quality. The presence of these pollutants may exacerbate pre-existing respiratory illnesses or lead to the development of asthma, especially in children. Gas stoves may also release other pollutants, including benzene and formaldehyde." The warning label must be easily readable and in a type size comparable to other consumer information on the product. Additionally, retailers must display a conspicuous sign near gas stoves with the same warning message in at least 72-point bold type, with the word "WARNING" in two-inch lettering. For online sales, the warning must be posted prominently on the product's web page. Violations of these requirements will be considered unfair or deceptive practices under Massachusetts consumer protection laws, and the state's department of health may create additional regulations regarding label placement and format.
