This bill aims to improve colorectal cancer screening and coverage for individuals aged 45 and older in Massachusetts by mandating that state employee insurance, and various types of health insurance plans (including accident and sickness, hospital service, medical service, and health maintenance contracts) provide comprehensive colorectal cancer screening services without any out-of-pocket costs. The covered screening methods include flexible sigmoidoscopy, FIT tests, genetic testing (KRAS, BRAF, PIK3CA), DNA tests, CT colonography, and colonoscopy, performed at medically recommended intervals. Additionally, the bill establishes a special 13-member commission to investigate the prevalence of colon cancer in individuals under 50, study prevention and support programs, and provide recommendations for additional legislation and resources to address early diagnosis and treatment. The commission, which includes representatives from state agencies, medical professionals, and individuals with personal experience with colon cancer, is required to submit a report with findings and recommendations by December 31, 2023.
