This bill amends Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90, Section 8 to allow individuals applying for a driver's license or renewing an existing license the option to have their blood type printed on their REAL-ID-compliant or Massachusetts driver's license. The Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) would be required to provide a way for applicants to voluntarily include their blood type on their license. A REAL-ID is a form of identification that meets increased security standards established by the federal REAL ID Act, which was passed in 2005 to establish minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards. The purpose of including blood type on a license appears to be to provide critical medical information that could be helpful in emergency medical situations where the license holder might be unable to communicate their blood type.
