Specifically, the bill allows parents, children, siblings, or spouses of police officers killed while serving in municipal, state, university, or Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority police departments to receive a distinctive "Blue Star Family" license plate or emblem at no charge. To qualify, the police officer's death must meet the criteria for inclusion on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. The registrar can issue these special plates for private passenger vehicles, with the option of a personalized registration of up to 6 characters. This legislation aims to honor and recognize the families of police officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their communities by providing a meaningful way to memorialize their loved ones through a specialized vehicle registration.
